The Ground Beneath Us
Mornings like these were precious things.

Seldom this newleaf did the sky cast off its overcast cloak in favor of sunlight for adornment, but today Wrenfoot suspects it wears not even a single cloud. In the center of camp, where boughs above cannot reach out to belie the sun’s presence, she feels its warmth generously against her back, a welcome imbibement after so many moons passed beneath the banner of clouds. It grants her a spirited brio which she finds herself eager to not let go to waste (however much she might like to linger and enjoy the rare sunshine), and toes her way across clan camp where Waspwing’s scent catches on her tongue, finding him lounging out beneath the day’s warm light.

A display of laziness, perhaps, among so many cats already set about their days, but who could blame him, really? She seats herself beside him, flicking her tail where she finds his nose in hopes of rousing him to consciousness with some mild, deliberate annoyance.

“Come, you great dormouse.” she says, though there is an obvious shine to her voice that betrays her good mood. “I should like to have the Thunderpath border checked before the sun falls out of the sky at least.”

and one day, I am gonna grow wings
With no clouds in the sky Waspwing was in and out of sleep, battling his want to stay asleep and his body’s need to roll over, the unblinking sun cast hot rays on his amber coat and his stomach may start boiling if he didn’t remove it from the heat. Again, in and out of consciousness, Waspwing could hear the faint sounds of clan cats walking around the territory, apprentices and mentors training, sparring, and Waspwing lounged in the middle of it all on his back, the calm orange cat sunning his belly was the eye of the activity hurricane around him, exactly how he liked it.

Waspwing succumbed to the urge to roll over, keeping his eyes closed the cool grass embraced his hot fur and the sun spread over his back, almost immediately warming his coat. A cat sandwich. A grilled cheese that had just been flipped. His back was being cooked and Waspwing was in cat-bliss.

He faded into a nap once more, his ears would twitch and the sounds around him dulled while sleep pulled him farther and farther away from the grass and sunshine until some crunching of grass and a light, feathery tap on his nose broke his relaxation. He immediately shook his head and exhaled out his nose, expelling what he thought was a bug. His head shook once more in succession, emitting a quick squeaky sneeze before opening his eyes.
He weakly squinted at soft, toffee fur until his amber eyes fell on Wrenfoot, her eyes blankly stared into the grass before her. She couldn’t see him but Waspwing glared at her before moving into several stretching positions.
I should like to have the Thunderpath border checked before the sun falls out of the sky at least.
Waspwing’s legs were fully extended behind him, spreading his paws to wake up the muscles in each of his extra toes. “Yeah, yeah,” Waspwing began, pausing to give a great yawn and another shake of his head, “sorry Mom, I’ll get right on it.”

The tom slowly blinked his eyes and turned his pupils towards Wrenfoot. Scowling, he stood and yawned once more, “Why do you always have to volunteer me for these things? I was having a great day without you.”
That last part was a joke, but Waspwing and Wrenfoot go back far enough as friends so he knew she wouldn’t get offended. Somewhere in his sleepy heart he kind of wished she would, though, and maybe he could get back to sleep.

As he stands, Wrenfoot rises also to her paws, stepping gently away as his figure grows tall beside her.

“It’s not as though I can expect you to volunteer yourself,” she says, her voice low and even, though touched with a teasing purr which she makes no effort to hide. She turns her back to the tom, bidding him follow with a small movement of her tail as she toes her way across camp. She pauses only a moment at the entrance to bid welcome a returning hunt, then they are off.

Where her gait within the camp walls is marked by a liesurely, meticulous pace, out here, as camp-scent trails further and further behind them, Wrenfoot’s stride grows ever bolder. With each step further to the forest she grows more valorous, more certain in her movements. The particular carefulness with which she navigates the world is not wholly cast off as the pair canter neatly through the wood, but to those who know her well it is easy to see how she walks more confidently out here.

Within their home, among the bustle of warriors and playful romp of kits, she must take great care to not step into her fellows where they stand, nor let her paw stray into another’s fresh-kill left idling on the ground. Out here in the forest, where she has taken great time and effort to know its landscape by her heart, she is free to move candidly. Though her paw occasionally bumps a stone or fallen branch or some-such, no obstacle causes her more than raise her paw a mouse-length higher as she strides alongside Waspwing.

Above them the canopy casts dappled shade over their bodies, teases of warm sunlight stroking their backs as they cut through the forest. Unable to stay her thoughts for long from the rare sunshine, Wrenfoot breaks the companionable silence in which they’ve travelled. “I imagine the Thunderpath will be blistering beneath the sun today,” she says, her thoughts bent toward the memory of its strange texture beneath her paw, how it drank up heat more greedily than the sunningrocks themselves. As she lingers on the thought, other memories of the border leap to mind. Her nose curls up reflexively with distaste. “I hope it is not so crowded with its beasts today,” she admits, allowing a rare display of displeasure to color her voice. Their awful stench aside, she could not stand the dreadful noises they make.

and one day, I am gonna grow wings
Yeah, well. Whatever.” Waspwing retorted almost immediately to Wrenfoots tease, his sleepy glare still directed at her back as she walked past him and toward the camp’s entrance. He had known her for so long and the confidence in which she held herself still was remarkable, even Waspwing didn’t walk like that and he was able to see. She must have not heard his pawsteps following her because her tail flicked, as if to say come on you lazy bastard, to which he complied, he couldn’t argue with that. He jogged up behind her to meet her pace as she walked straight through camp without an ounce of hesitation and as she paused at the camp’s entrance to greet some other warriors it was Waspwing who had to open his eyes and watch where he was going as he almost bumped into Wrenfoot’s backside. He managed to wiggle his way out of the position and continued to follow her through the camp’s entrance.

Once through Waspwing is left behind as Wrenfoot seems ever more confident the farther away she gets from camp. Less foreign obstacles to trip her up, Waspwing guesses, but it still amazes him. He recalls when she was little and how he would tease her, but Waspwing figures that might have actually helped her. He isn’t completely confident he knows how her brain works but something to do with hearing spacial differences certainly must impact it. He can’t imagine what it’s like to not see things, and he doesn’t really want to find out very soon. Again, he jogs up to meet her pace and finds a rhythm they are both comfortable with traveling at, side-by-side.

Wrenfoot breaks their comfortable silence, commenting on the Thunderpath. His ears twitch as he listens to her but doesn’t turn his head, knowing it won’t make a difference if he looks at her or not. Her comment on the sun makes him look up at the canopy of trees above him, squinting as the sun peeks through the leaves and catches his eye a couple times. He blinks and shakes his head. The sun was getting hotter, he didn’t realize how late in the day it must be to have the sun beam down so strongly. They had been walking rather briskly under the trees so the actual sunspots hadn’t hit his back properly. When they left it was cool, though. Perhaps the Thunderpath itself was changing the temperature of the forest?

Waspwing looks over to Wrenfoot as she sneers about the monsters that cross the Thunderpath. He hadn’t thought of that, and he wrinkled his nose in muscle memory, reacting to the smell they give off as they pass by.

Hey Wren, no need to worry,” Waspwing padded ahead of her quickly and flicked his tail over her nose. “If any one of those stinky beasts comes after you I’ll whack it, he flicked his paw against a stone and sent it tumbling past Wrenfoot’s paws, “right on its big ol’ nose. Ha ha!” Waspwing turned around and flicked his tail against her nose again to confuse her senses, and he continued padding ahead toward their destination.
